Public Rights of Way
All public rights of way are marked along their route with waymarkers. Hertfordshire County Council assigns a number to each right of way within each parish.
- A footpath (FP, marked with a yellow waymarker) may be used by pedestrians with ‘normal accompaniment’ (eg. a dog, pram or wheelchair). It is a criminal offence to drive a motor vehicle along a footpath and there is no legal right to ride or even take a horse or bicycle along a footpath.
- A bridleway (BR, blue waymarker) may be used by pedestrians, horseriders and pedal-cyclists. Cyclists must give way to pedestrians and horseriders. It is a criminal offence to drive a motor vehicle along a bridleway and there is no legal right to take a horse-drawn vehicle along a bridleway.
- A restricted byway (RB, black waymarker) may be used by pedestrians, horseriders, pedal-cyclists and non-motorised vehicles.
- A byway open to all traffic (BOAT, red waymarker) may be used by pedestrians, horseriders, cyclists and vehicular traffic and is usually unsurfaced. Any vehicle using a BOAT must be fully taxed, MOT’d and insured and the driver must hold the appropriate driving licence. The highway authority has no duty to maintain the route to a higher standard than in the past, or to a standard suitable for vehicles.
